How to De-Risk Sustainable Energy Projects in Africa Effectively?

The following proposal for a public showcase will revolve around risk mitigation solutions for renewable energy projects in Africa. Risk perception has been underlined as a key deterrent for long-term investments in this market, and some existing options have shown their limits.

The workshop will include the presentation of the African Energy Guarantee Facility (AEGF). AEGF is a part of the European Guarantee for Renewable Energy (EGRE), which shall remove barriers for private investments in the sustainable energy sector in Africa. The insurance scheme has been developed by private and public partners from both continents. Practical and market-oriented insights will be given on:

• Insurance products offered under AEGF (so far) and covered risks
• Benefits that AEGF provides for renewable and clean energy projects to investors, project developers and banks
• How AEGF can help investors with risk profile building.

The introduction to AEGF would then be followed by a discussion with the participants: Where do investors, project developers and banks see improvement potential with regard to promoting private investments into the renewable energy sector in Africa? What are their main concerns, and where have they experienced challenges and seen risks in such projects? Which opportunities do they see? What is the role risk mitigation solutions play when closing projects?
